A
virtual field trip on CD-ROM (short
version)
This CD-ROM allows the user to explore
and learn about the volcanology of one
of New Zealand's most spectacular landscapes.
It Is suitable for secondary and tertiary
students, plus the general public.
The
virtual field trip of 360 degree panoramic
images is supported by explanatory
hotspots, background information, maps,
diagrams,
an indexed slide show, animations,
eruption movies, and a glossary. Development
of
the CD-ROM was based on research and
teaching carried out by volcanologists
in the Department
of Earth Sciences <www.earth.waikato.ac.nz>
at The University of Waikato.
The
CD-ROM has been produced by the
Waikato Innovation Centre for Electronic
Education (WICeD™) at The
University of Waikato.

(2003) Volcanology of the Tongariro
Crossing: A virtual field trip on CD-ROM.
Hamilton, New Zealand: The University
of Waikato.
Thanks to this new CD-ROM, it is now
possible to explore and learn about one
of New Zealand's most amazing volcanic
landscapes from the comfort of home.

One
of the unique advantages of this virtual
field trip of the Tongariro Crossing
is that, in addition to viewing the spectacular
360 degree panoramic images, maps,
and
movies of eruptions, you can also (virtually)
reach out and touch any part of the
landscape and have the geology instantly
and accurately
explained via a hotspot.

The field trip
stops are accessible from clickable
hot spots on a DEM (Digital
Elevation Model) or topographic
map of
the Tongariro area.

A Volcanology
module brings together research on
the area (including
maps and diagrams)
arranged by geological history
topics.

Supporting information includes
an indexed slide-show of photographs,
eruption movies
and animations, and a glossary.
